The Sharp Zaurus Guide (ENGLISH DIGEST)

English Digest

Where to buy
You may buy a sharp zaurus at every electronics shop or department store in japan for a reasonable price. You may also buy one online — it's much more expensive but it's cheaper than you average flight to Tokyo and back. Have a look at Conics or Pulster.

Convert OS to English

Our english conversions works with all SL-Series zaurus models, including the new SL-C1000, SL-C3000 and SL-C3100 models. After the conversion the OS is changed to english. Japanese character recognition is not affected by our conversion. It still works after converting.

Download the following files and put them on the SD-card:

To run these files you need the Zaurus terminal. It used to be installed, but for some newer models you must install that application first.

Free Download: Zaurus Terminal

Open the terminal and input

cd /mnt/card/

Press Return.

su

Press Return.

./convert.sh

Press Return again. If an error message pops up enter:

sh ./convert.sh

and press return. Reboot.

Install the dictionary reader Z-TEN

Download and install the following two files

http://www.gohome.org/zten/zten_1.6.2_arm.ipk
http://www.gohome.org/zten/kakasi_2.3.4-2_arm.ipk

Download Edict (Version 2) and unzip. (Edict is one of the standart English-Japanese / Japanese-English dictionaries.) If you feel like spending USD 150, get yourself the new Kenkyusha Dictionary. It literally has nearly half a million entries, example senctences and a huge appendix on history and law. Completly bilingual.

Create an folder named 'dict' on your SD-Card. Inside this folder create a new folder named 'edict' and copy the files 'catalogs','readme.pkg' and 'edict.txt' inside. Create another 'edict' folder. Open it and create the folder 'data' inside. Copy the 'honmon' in this data folder.

That structure is always the same. Say you had an dictionary called 'abc' you would create and 'abc'-folder inside the 'dict'-folder. You would copy the catalogs file into this 'abc' folder. Then you create another 'abc'-folder inside the first one, create a 'data'-folder and copy the honmon inside.

Open Z-TEN and import the dictionaries by clicking the first menu item in the drop down menu. Then select the dictionary of your choice and click the arrow. The dictionaries that appear at the right side of the screen are "active". Click OK. Now you can start your search queries.
